Remote Working: Reduce the risk of cyberattacks

As remote working becomes the new normal, so is the threat of cyberattacks. The possibility of a security breach has always loomed for organizations. Now that a growing number of the current workforce continues to work at home using personal wireless connections and devices, the risk of a security breach is even greater. A 2020 study commissioned by Egress shows 78% of IT leaders surveyed say employees have put data at risk accidentally. Remote working enables more access points and security vulnerabilities for cybercriminals. Consumer Reports noted a rise in the number of phishing scams as hackers set their sights on personal devices to capture company data.  Organizations can work to contain these problem areas with a consistent strategy.

Crisis Planning

In a remote working environment, it is critical to have a plan to avoid a data breach and develop a checklist if one occurs. This includes vulnerability scanning and security assessment. Also valuable is real-time monitoring, analysis, and detection of security threats. A critical piece to crisis planning is understanding the data from security assessments across the enterprise. Collecting the relevant information with the appropriate management systems will make it easier to spot unusual activities.

Employee Training

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, many companies made the shift to working remotely for the first time. For some, the rapid adjustment offered little time for adequate training for accessing the server remotely, using personal devices, and communicating with teams through videoconferencing - all prime opportunities for hackers. In this new work environment, it is critical to reiterate organization policy and processes for remote working - in addition to updating policies as needed -  to reduce the risk of a data breach.
