Bell Techlogix Benefits Manager impacts lives through service

I accepted an invitation from my dad to serve alongside his co-workers and my brother to build a home for a family in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. The service project, which occurred in January, was part of  Homes of Hope, which partners with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) to build homes around the world for families in need.

As is a common saying around the YWAM campus, this experience would be more than just building a physical house for a family in need. It was a chance not only to provide a mom and dad and their three children, ranging from ages 6 –12, a few basic needs; a dry, insulated home and a couple months of food and provisions but most importantly it was a tangible way to show them they are loved and valued. It is also an opportunity for a family to learn that they can dare to dream. One of the most impactful takeaways in working with this group was learning that severe poverty can stunt a person’s ability to see beyond their situation and imagine a life other than the one they have.

As we first met the family you could sense they were shy and were feeling a variety of emotions; having 23 people show up at your home can be overwhelming to say the least! But over the course of two days as we built their new home alongside them, you could sense how much of an impact this would have for their family. The hope and pride in the parents’ eyes as they stood in their new home was everything. Maureen (mom) selected the yellow paint color for her home, a color of cheer and hope.

Shifting my focus and energy away from myself to serve a family that did not have the means to help themselves was like a breath of fresh air. I was reminded that I was created to serve others and to show God’s love in a tangible way. That is what service means to me: it’s not all about me. If you ever have an opportunity to join forces with Homes of Hope, I highly recommend it!
