Women's History Month: Bell Techlogix Director reflects on valuable lessons from her mother

As part of our Women's History Month recognition, female professionals at Bell Techlogix are sharing their stories and insights about career, family, and life. Meet Kristy Smith, Director of Cross Functional Services.

What does Women's History Month mean to you, and how do you think it's important for the workplace?

Women's History Month serves as a reminder of the resilience, courage, and perseverance of women who have fought for equality and justice in the face of adversity. It's an opportunity to honor trailblazers, activists, and unsung heroes who have paved the way for future generations.

Women's History Month is also a call to action. It's a reminder that the fight for gender equality is far from over and that there is still work to be done. It's a time to recommit ourselves to dismantling barriers, challenging gender stereotypes, and creating a more inclusive and equitable world for all.

Who is a woman from history or a contemporary female figure who has inspired you, and why?

My mother is my biggest inspiration, she exemplified qualities of strength, resilience, and unwavering determination. When I was a young child my father fell ill and could no longer work, so she moved from housewife to the role of breadwinner. Despite the challenges that life threw her way, she refused to be defined by circumstances. Instead, she embarked on a remarkable journey of self-improvement and growth. She enrolled in college, got her degree and began a new career - a testament to her unwavering commitment to creating a better future for herself and our family.

She taught me that adversity is not a roadblock but an opportunity for growth, and that with dedication and perseverance, anything is possible. Above all, my mother instilled in me the belief that I am the master of my own fate. Her example serves as a constant reminder that I have the power to shape my destiny and pursue my dreams with unwavering determination. I carry her lessons with me as I navigate life's challenges and strive to become the best version of myself.

How do you think we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women in the workplace?

We can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women in the workplace by actively promoting and supporting initiatives aimed at increasing gender diversity in all levels of the organization. We can implement mentorship programs and provide resources for career development specifically tailored to women. We can encourage employees to challenge assumptions and stereotypes, and create processes that mitigate bias in hiring, promotion, and performance evaluations. Leaders should champion gender equality, ensure equitable opportunities for career advancement, and actively listen to the perspectives and experiences of women in the workplace.
